Remote interviews test a different skill than on-site ones: clear thinking out loud, over a laggy connection. Prepare for that, not just the code.

## The setup

- Test your camera, mic, and internet the day before.
- A clean, quiet background and good light matter more than you think.
- Keep water and a notepad within reach. Silence while you think is fine, say so: *"Let me think for a moment."*

## What they are really assessing

- **Communication.** Narrate your reasoning. A thoughtful wrong answer beats silent guessing.
- **Collaboration.** Ask clarifying questions before you code, exactly as you would with a colleague.
- **Adaptability.** When they nudge you, take the hint and adjust.

## Structure your answers

For behavioural questions, use a light STAR: situation, what you did, result. For system questions, start at a high level, then drill into one area rather than naming every technology you know.

## Practice aloud

It feels ridiculous and it works. Do a mock with a friend over the same tools you will use.

## The take-home, next

If they send work home, treat it as a communication exercise as much as a coding one; see [beating the take-home](/guides/beating-the-take-home-without-burning-your-weekend).
