Negotiating your first offer without losing it

Negotiation is not a fight. It is a short, warm conversation you prepare for once and reuse forever.

Most developers leave money on the table because they are afraid of sounding greedy. Done well, negotiation is warm, brief, and expected.

Before you negotiate

Know your target and floor, and know the band. You cannot negotiate what you cannot name.

The script

  1. Thank them, show enthusiasm. Offers go to people they like.
  2. Ask for the full picture, base, bonus, equity, benefits, so you compare total compensation.
  3. Make one clear ask, backed by a reason: "Based on the scope and my experience with [specific thing], I was targeting [number]. Can we get there?"
  4. Pause. Let them respond. Silence is your friend.

If the answer is no

Ask what is flexible, signing bonus, review in six months, an extra week of leave, a learning budget. Money is not the only lever.

The bigger lever

The strongest position is a second offer or an active process. Interview in parallel where you can, and be honest about it. You are not being disloyal; you are being a professional.

Keep it human

Whatever happens, stay gracious. The person across the table may hire you again in five years, or you them.
